Action Aid Project 1 Activities

The training was aimed to conduct workshop project planning meeting in stakeholder orientation on protection on GBV service as result of conflict. Stakeholders were from woreda health office, woreda social affairs, women, children and social affair, woreda communication bureau, education affairs, wereda justice and Administration representatives. At the end common understanding was taken from the program benefit point as immediate response through such kind of programme and agreements were signed between Lasta wereda Finance, Women, Children and Social affairs on one side and NMWEO at other side.

The training was held for two days and it aimed to enable the volunteers to give service and support for these who seeking psychosocial support, reporting and referral for GBV survivors and community facilitation. During the two-day workshop the back ground of the conflict and impacts of conflict particularly committed Gender Based Violence in different forms sexual abuse, rape, group sex and insulting and humiliating and beating presented and Discussion and summaries were made.

Awareness raising was introduced by 20 volunteers that work on 5 kebeles. The contents of the education were elimination of SGBV on the community. Thus, we addressed 2000 people to get awareness raising and getting a space to community discussion. Most participants reflected that there is GBV in different forms and most of these actions are accepted among societies.

The training’s aim was to provide awareness raising for community influencers such as religious leaders and village elderly to eliminate GBV and fight stigma on GBV victims/survivors. The training was in the form of discussion and question were raised by agreeing to discussed on the selected topics/The trainer forwarded some of them/.

  1.  Violence and its nature.
  2. The impacts of religion to violence particularly early marriage.
  3. The situation of women to lower status in the society, economic and decision-making power.
  4. The obstacle to fight/eradicate such problems.
  5. The possible situation to eradicate these problems/ obstacles.

Among 160 beneficiaries 132(82.5%) and 28(17.5%) women are involved in on-farm and off-farm activity respectively. On providing start-up capital totally 2,400,000.00 (Two Million four hundred thousand ETB) dispersed for 160 women (proven war-affected) project beneficiaries successfully.

     By Establishing Committee composed of 5 experts/persons (2 from Cooperative office, 1 from Lasta wereda women and children affairs office, and 1 from Animal breeding department and 1 from NMWEO project officer), the dispersing and purchasing of Goats/Sheep processes were carefully done.

     Moreover, market orientation was conducted and asserted with discussion financial freedom, decision and willingness to purchase the sheep/Goats with the help of committee that consist experts. Since from the commencement, 60 women were purchasing sheep and Got at least 2- 5 female pregnant Sheep/Goat and some Male Goat for fattening and breeding. The cost of female Goat was 2700-5000 and the Sheep were 3000-5000. The project respect women willingness and decision that who want purchase for next market because of the fearing of escalating of the price and the off-farm beneficiaries for purchasing the material they want on market.
